Blood in the Urine

It’s not normal to have blood in the urine. If you see it, you should always call your doctor. He or she will review your medical history, do a physical exam, look at your urine under a microscope, and order a culture of it.

Blood in the urine is often a sign of a problem with your kidneys, genitals, prostate, or urinary tract, and can be caused by:

  • Kidney stones (is most often accompanied by pain)
  • Kidney infection or urinary tract infection (usually accompanied by pain)
  • Cancer of the kidney, bladder, prostate, or ureter
  • Recent trauma
  • Kidney disease or polycystic kidney disease

Medicines like aspirin can also cause blood in urine, and so can strenuous exercise.
