CT scans are an important diagnostic imaging
tool |
CT or CAT
(computerized axial tomography) scans use a computer to combine a series of
x-rays to produce a three-dimensional image of the internal organs and
structures within the body. CAT scans have been used in diagnostic medicine
since about 1972. At St. Mary Medical Center, CT technology functions as a vital
diagnostic tool in the development of such service lines as trauma and emergency
care, cardiology, oncology (cancer), internal and orthopedic medicine. As Bucks
County’s only state-certified Trauma Center, St. Mary Medical Center is equipped
to provide CT capability
24-hours a day, 365 days of the year.
New 64-slice CT scanner for Cardiac Diagnostics
The CT Helical
scanner at St. Mary is extremely fast and accurate. Helical scanning
considerably reduces exam time, as well as radiation exposure. In addition, the
Helical CT scanner produces a set of data for the entire scanned region in
comparison to "slices" of data created in standard CT studies, therefore
producing a more refined image to more accurately detect minute abnormalities
for better diagnosis.

And because of its unique imaging qualities, the Helical CT supports more
complex diagnostic studies. CT angiography can delineate the blood supply to
extremities, brain, kidneys and other organs, including the heart. A virtual
endoscopy done on a Helical CT is a non-invasive technique to view such internal
organs as the colon or bronchi. And a Helical CT is more effective for image
studies for large and overweight patients and is superior for diagnosing such
medical conditions as pulmonary embolisms, kidney stones, early lung cancer or
appendicitis.
