Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) is an experience based theological program for persons who desire to experience more about ministry formation. CPE relies on the adult learner to develop educational goals within the framework of a peer group. Each CPE chaplain intern is assigned to a particular patient unit which is then the content for theological reflection and spiritual care skills development as a member of a holistic healthcare team. Persons with theological experience/education and motivation to deepen ministry skills are invited to apply. St. Mary CPE program offers ministry opportunities in acute care, long term care, elder services, outpatient care, home health and hospice care.
In addition to the intern's clinical experiences, a broad range of didactics are presented by experts in the fields of psychology, theology, medicine, pastoral/spiritual studies, diverse faith traditions and multicultural diversity. This program prepares individuals to seek potential ministry opportunities in various local communitites. A possibility for specialty programs are available for advanced students. After fully completing four units of CPE and following the readiness protocol for interview chaplain interns may enter a certification process. Chaplain certification is awarded by cognate groups such as: the Association of Professional chaplains (APC) and the National Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC). Within the Roman Catholic tradition students may apply for certification as a Board Certified Chaplain by the National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC).
