Neurosurgery “Brain Lab” Uses Image-Guided Computer to
Target Brain Tumors with Precision Accuracy
When neurological issues arise, patients may now experience an
intra-operative frameless stereotaxic surgery system, more commonly referred to
as “Brain Lab.” This system uses an optimal camera, a computer, and a
laser to determine the precise location of a brain tumor. It is similar to
having a Global Positioning System in the operating room. Yet instead of
pinpointing a location someplace on the globe, Brain Lab is able to zero in on
diseased tissue without damaging the surrounding normal tissue.
Key benefits of Brain Lab are improved accuracy, shortened
operating time, a smaller cranial incision, less pain for the patient, and, most
importantly, a much safer overall procedure. Notes neurosurgeon Dr. Mark
McLaughlin, “Years ago, you would open the skull and not always be able to see
where the tumor was. This surgery is much more accurate. It
increases precision with the least amount of side
effects.”
