St. Mary Medical Center Designated an ACR Breast Imaging Center of Excellence - Archived
LANGHORNE, Pa., February 21, 2011 – The Breast Center at St. Mary Medical Center has been designated as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by
the American College of Radiology (ACR).
In awarding status as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, the ACR recognizes that St. Mary’s breast imaging center earned accreditation in all of the
College’s voluntary, breast-imaging accreditation programs and modules, in addition to the mandatory Mammography Accreditation Program. The St. Mary Breast
Center is equipped with state-of-the-art technology for early detection, diagnosis and treatment. The Breast Center, which opened in 2006, provides expert,
compassionate care in a comfortable, warm environment; a full array of services, and timely responses to health issues that may arise. The St. Mary Breast
Center offers a streamlined approach that allows for convenient scheduling options and shortened waiting times for digital mammography and other test
results. Each patient receives emotional support as well as expert care ranging from chemotherapy to radiation oncology to surgery and breast reconstruction
The breast imaging services at St. Mary are fully accredited in digital mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound, and ultrasound-guided
breast biopsy. Peer-review evaluations, conducted by the ACR in each breast-imaging modality by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are
experts in the field, have determined that St. Mary has achieved high practice standards in image quality, personnel qualifications, facility equipment,
quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs.
“We are very pleased the ACR has recognized St. Mary with this designation of excellence,” says Dr. Paul Weiser, St. Mary Medical Director of Imaging. “We
believe the use of digital technology in mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound, and ultrasound-guided breast biopsy provide precision
and increased ease of use for our patients. Advanced technology coupled with our high standards for a quality program help ensure that we detect breast
cancer in its earliest stages, and that is of the utmost importance to St. Mary and our patients.”
In addition to receiving the distinguished Breast Imaging Center of Excellence distinction, St. Mary recently was recognized as being among the best
cancer programs in the United States by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons (ACoS). The St. Mary Regional Cancer Center earned ACoS
approval with commendation based on comprehensive standards of quality care. Only 25 percent of hospitals nationwide receive ACoS cancer program approval,
and of that elite group, only 60 percent earn approval with commendation.
The ACR, headquartered in Reston, Va., is a national organization serving more than 34,000 diagnostic/interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists,
nuclear medicine physicians, and medical physicists with programs for focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology, as well as the
delivery of comprehensive health care services.
