St. Mary Joint Replacement Program

St. Mary Medical Center's Joint Replacement Program Awarded Prestigious Joint Commission Recertification

LANGHORNE, PA., October 16, 2008 – St. Mary Medical Center’s joint replacement program recently earned Disease-Specific Care recertification from the Joint Commission. The Center for Joint Replacement offers comprehensive services for total hip and knee replacement surgeries. In 2006, this program became the first in Pennsylvania and one of only 14 programs nationwide to achieve the Gold Seal of Approval™ for joint replacement from the Joint Commission.

To earn and maintain this distinction of honor, St. Mary’s program undergoes an extensive, unannounced, on-site evaluation by a Joint Commission reviewer every two years, in addition to an annual performance improvement review. The on-site evaluation includes a rigorous review of the program’s processes, the program’s ability to evaluate and improve care within its own organization, and interviews with patients and colleagues. Through this evaluation process, St. Mary demonstrated that its hip and knee replacement program meets or exceeds national standards and guidelines that can significantly improve outcomes for joint-replacement patients.

According to Joint Commission Executive Director Jean Range, “certification demonstrates excellence in fostering better outcomes by the integration and coordination of care. The Joint Commission’s quality review programs for accreditation and certification represent the industry’s gold standard in healthcare.”

St. Mary has renovated patient rooms in the Center for Joint Replacement. The project has added seven private rooms, several of which are equipped with amenities such as flat-screen televisions and recliner chairs. Patients also have access to the center’s specially equipped rehabilitation gym, which is located on the unit, for physical and occupational therapy.
