Trauma Center
|
The St. Mary Trauma Center is one of 27 regional trauma centers to meet
the tough standards required for accreditation in the Commonwealth of
Pennsylvania by the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundations (PTSF). Our
Trauma Center is fully equipped to handle all types of immediate care
needs. From severely injured accident victims and patients requiring
immediate critical care to the prompt and effective treatment of a broken
bone or deep laceration, trauma-certified physicians and specially trained
clinical personnel excel in providing quality standards of professional
care. The St. Mary Trauma Team is designed to coordinate multiple aspects
of treatment and follow-up care. |

The trauma center
includes state-of-the-art trauma bays with immediate access to diagnostic
services and a sterile operating-room environment. Trauma patients are given
priority admission and immediate access to full services, including OR and CAT
scan.
The most common causes of injury that bring patients to a trauma
center are falls and motor vehicle crashes. These events cause
life-threatening trauma in multiple areas of the body. Other common causes of
injury include burns, gunshot wounds, and assaults.
The major component that differentiates a Trauma Center from
emergency care is the requirement for 24-hour availability of a team of
specially trained healthcare providers who have expertise in the care of
severely injured patients. These providers include trauma surgeons,
neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, cardiac surgeons, radiologists and nurses. A
Trauma Center also needs to have 24-hour availability of a trauma resuscitation
area in the Emergency Department, an operating room, laboratory testing,
diagnostic testing, blood bank and pharmacy.
The Trauma Center is fully staffed by trauma-certified surgeons and
personnel, 24-hours a day, 365 days a year. The St. Mary Medical Center Trauma
Service works closely with the Bucks County Emergency
Medical Services (EMS).
