Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) uses a large magnet and radio waves to create images on a computer that can detect subtle abnormalities, especially in soft tissue and organs. The scan is painless and does not involve x-ray radiation or radioactive material.
St. Mary has multiple MRI scanners including MRI systems highly specialized for more accurate imaging of the breast and prostate areas.
A physician may order an MRI or ultrasound study if a mammography indicates a suspicious area.
