Balloon Sinuplasty

Physicians at St. Mary are able to offer an innovative new option to patients suffering from chronic sinusitis — Balloon Sinuplasty™. Sinus infections (sinusitis) are one of the most common chronic health problems in the United States, with approximately 14 percent of adult Americans suffering from at least one episode of acute sinusitis each year.  While many people with sinusitis realize relief through the use of medical therapies such as antibiotics and topical nasal steroids, surgery is sometimes recommended if these therapies provide a patient with little or no relief. Until recently, traditional surgery for sinusitis, while endoscopic in nature, sometimes requires the removal of bone and tissue in order to open up blocked sinus passageways.   In the top 10 percent nationwide in volume and positive patient outcomes for this procedure, specially trained St. Mary physicians who perform this procedure offer patients experience and compassionate care. More Information About Balloon Sinuplasty™ Balloon Sinuplasty™ is a minimally invasive technology that uses a balloon catheter to quickly open and expand blocked sinuses.  Because this option is less invasive than traditional sinus surgical options, patient discomfort is reduced and recovery times are shorter. During a Balloon Sinuplasty™ a physician places a small, flexible sinus balloon catheter into the nose to reach the sinuses. The sinus balloon catheter is gradually inflated to gently restructure the previously blocked nasal passage, restoring normal sinus drainage and function.  The minimally invasive nature of this procedure reduces pain and bleeding, allowing many patients to return to normal activities more quickly.  Preventing the reoccurrence of chronic sinusitis can also significantly contribute to a patient's overall quality of life. Symptoms of Sinusitis Sinusitis is an inflammation of the sinus lining caused by bacterial, viral and/or microbial infections as well as structural issues like blockages of the sinus opening (ostium).  If the sinus opening is closed, normal mucus drainage may not occur – a condition that can lead to infection and inflammation of the sinuses.  Symptoms of sinusitis can often cause extensive discomfort and include the following: Facial pain, pressure, congestion or fullness Difficulty breathing through the nose Discharge of yellow or green mucus from the nose Tooth pain Loss of the sense of smell or taste Headache Fatigue Sore throat Bad breath Often these symptoms run their course in a few days, yet if sinusitis occurs frequently or lasts three months or longer, it may be considered chronic.
