In June 2010, St. Mary implemented the MobiLab system, a computerized bedside-identification system used for the collection of lab samples. The system identifies the patient using the barcode technology, identifies the clinician collecting the sample, and enters the type of test ordered by the physician. Barcode labels are printed and applied to the collected sample at the patient's bedside. The sample is transported through a pneumatic tube into the lab where the automated lab system assists in performing a variety of steps in routine specimen-processing tasks.
Process tasks performed will include logging specimens into the computer, centrifuging the tubes, dividing the samples for different tests, delivery of the samples to the instrument for testing, and preparing the tubes for storage.
