St. Mary Imaging in Richboro Adds CT Capabilities
Addition of services meets the growing needs of patients who require sophisticated imaging.

LANGHORNE, Pa., May 21, 2008 – St. Mary Medical Center today announced that St. Mary Imaging in Richboro, formerly Langhorne MRI, Richboro Campus, will add computerized axial tomography (CT) scan capabilities to complement existing MRI studies performed there. The offsite imaging center was opened in 2006 as a wholly owned subsidiary of the Medical Center to expand service and provide a convenient community location for outpatients requiring diagnostic imaging studies.

By adding CT scans to services at the Richboro campus, St. Mary Imaging enhances access to advanced imaging services to help meet a growing need in the region for the caliber of professional, high-quality studies preferred by physicians. St. Mary now provides MRI and CT services at two convenient locations – on its main campus in Langhorne, as well as the Richboro location in the Richboro Shopping Plaza, 1059 Second Street Pike.

In addition, images produced at the Richboro location are fully integrated with the St. Mary Picture Archival and Communication System (PACS). PACS technology electronically converts radiology images, including MRI and CT scans, to digital files. With PACS, doctors can conveniently access patient images over a secure internet-based channel available at various networked sites within the hospital or off campus.

During a CT scan, a computer combines a series of X-rays to produce a three-dimensional image of targeted internal organs and structures within the body. St. Mary Imaging at Richboro will be using a helical CT system, an extremely fast and accurate type of scan, to perform diagnostic studies of the abdomen, chest, spine and head. At St. Mary Medical Center, CT technology functions as a vital diagnostic tool in such service lines as trauma and emergency care, cardiology, oncology, and internal medicine. Specialized studies for breast and prostate and cardiac angiography will continue to be performed at the Imaging Center on the main campus.

According to Sue Monte, service line administrator for radiology and cancer at St. Mary, the Medical Center is expanding capabilities to accommodate the needs of the community. “It is important for patients to know that when they require advanced diagnostic imaging, they have options available to obtain their results quickly and conveniently. We can accommodate more patients with the highest quality images, advanced technology, and a dedicated professional staff,” Monte says.

Plans to add x-ray, ultrasound, mammography, and bone density capabilities in the future at the St. Mary Imaging Richboro location are being considered, Monte says.

“We feel that this addition to our services at St. Mary Imaging in Richboro will be a major convenience for patients,” adds Monte. “In addition to reducing the wait for scheduled appointments, we are able to accommodate a growing number of referrals and walk-in patients.”

St. Mary Imaging is accredited by the American College of Radiology, a national quality indicator. In addition, all technologists are nationally certified and all studies are read by board-certified radiologists. “This is important for patients to know and be assured that they are getting a quality study at St. Mary,” Monte says. Most insurance coverage is accepted, but pre-certification may be required. Walk-ins are accepted with insurance approval.
