What is Holistic Care?

As the area’s first hospital to offer on-site holistic services, St. Mary Medical Center is dedicated to promoting the understanding that healing is a journey that encompasses body, mind and spirit. In this balanced approach, various services such as massage therapy, mind-body techniques and lifestyle enrichment classes are offered as compassionate components to help you cope more effectively and heal more completely. In addition to quality medical care, holistic services are a wonderful support when facing the challenges of a serious diagnosis, addressing the symptoms and stress of a chronic health condition or dealing with the pressures of an overly demanding lifestyle.

The St. Mary Philosophy

Holistic services are infused with a spiritual foundation that encourages peacefulness and deep relaxation. As a Catholic health care institution, we believe in and promote a level of care that respects the mind, supports the body, and honors the spirit, holding dear to our Catholic values. We take care in assuring that all of our services share in this foundational philosophy. While holistic services may be considered less conventional than standard medical care, we believe their benefits are not undermining to our beliefs, yet rather they are therapeutic, loving and compassionate.

How Will Holistic Services Help Me?

Massage services can be used as an adjunct to your medical treatment or simply to encourage relaxation. They have been found to facilitate healing, minimize the side effects of medical treatments, boost immune response, lower blood pressure, relax muscles and ease symptoms of stress and depression. They include:

♦ Therapeutic Massage ♦ Craniosacral Therapy
♦ Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage      ♦ Therapeutic Touch
♦ Reflexology ♦ Myofascial Release Therapy
♦ Deep Tissue Massage

Mind-body techniques such as Guided Imagery, Essential Breathing Techniques, Clinical Hypnotherapy, and Preparing for Surgery, Chemotherapy or Radiation create an awareness of how thoughts and feelings affect your body. With this understanding you take an active role in your healing process becoming your own best monitor and support system, thus producing the health enhancing feelings of peace and optimism.

Lifestyle enrichment classes such as Yoga, T’ai Chi and Gentle Movement encourage health and vitality through movement so that you can deepen body awareness, increase circulation, improve physical fitness and reenergize.

All holistic services are provided by professionally trained and licensed therapists and conducted in a private, tranquil setting, allowing individuals to experience peace and relaxation.
